Is your home cosy or cluttered?
No matter what your personal style is or how beautiful your furnishings may be, a well decorated living room needs a fixed point around which everything else revolves. Decorating professionals call this a focal point. It can be anything - a sofa, a painting, a wall unit, your fireplace - but making the most of your focal point will make your room inviting and warm, as well as functional.

Take this quiz to find out if your room has a focal point - and learn how to create one if it doesn't.

1. Is it obvious what the largest or most dramatic element in your main/living room is?
  Yes
I have many large elements in my room
  I don't have anything noteworthy

2. Have you accentuated this area with complementary furniture, paintings or other accessories?
Accessories aren't my strong suit - I either don't have any or have so many that they are scattered everywhere
Yes, I have added accessory tables, lamps or pictures to help accentuate the area, giving it a clean, thoughtful look
I have well chosen accessories in many different places of my room, but they are not gathered around any one visual anchor

3. Do you have seating arranged to encourage people to gather around your most dramatic or largest element? (Chairs opposite a sofa, or a sofa across from an entertainment centre, for example.)
I have a seating area, but it doesn't centre directly on my focal point
I only have a sofa, or chairs positioned wherever there's empty space
  Yes
